Alix E. Harrow’s The Ten Thousand Doors of January meets The Once and Future Witches in A Tragedy of Sacrifice, the profoundly moving and beautifully bittersweet standalone prequel novella to Kaylea Prime’s historical portal fantasy series. Full of inspiringly defiant women, shape-shifting lightning bird witches, dangerous celestial magic, unrequited sapphic yearning, and heartbreaking sacrifice, this little witchy tale has the power to both shatter your heart and soothe your soul all in just a few stunning pages.

From the moment I read the first page of A Tragedy of Sacrifice, I knew I had something special on my hands. Even though this is only my first introduction to the Tears of Flame series, I immediately felt at home in this world (or should I say, these worlds) and connected to the characters on a deep emotional level. Prime’s beautifully lush and vulnerably intimate prose immediately spoke to my heart, and the irresistibly addictive air of wonder, mystery, and intrigue had me spellbound from start to finish.
On the surface, A Tragedy of Sacrifice tells the story of two courageous women from two different worlds who find each other in 1769 Massachusetts and try to light up the flames of the suffragette movement. Yet at its core, this is much more than just a story about women’s rights; it’s a story about sacrifice, regret, self-discovery, the quiet power of femininity, forgiveness (both of others and of oneself), and most of all, it’s a story about love in all its devastating beauty.

The way that Prime organically weaves these weighty themes into the personal stories of Arínor and Clemency made them shine so brightly, and I personally didn’t even mind that some of the messaging felt a bit on-the-nose at times because the emotive writing had me so deeply immersed and entranced. The uniquely beautiful dynamic between Arínor and Clemency really tugged on my heartstrings in all the most unexpected ways, and I loved how they both inspired each other without even realising it at times. Yet for all that this story is so beautifully and relatably human, it also provides plenty of unique fantastical elements that had me completely awe-struck.
While most of A Tragedy of Sacrifice is set in a masterfully evoked historical Boston during the Revolution Era, we also get to discover Arínor’s dark yet wondrous homeworld of Arwé, where women have equal rights and different kinds of magic thrive. The lore is so rich, and I especially loved the exploration of the Armíndi culture, an immortal race who has the ability to shape-shift into lightning birds. Arínor’s powers were both deeply fascinating and slightly terrifying, and her intense inner conflict over her exceptional skill in the outlawed and feared Void magic made her such a beautifully complex and deeply rootable woman to me.

If this is what Prime can deliver in a novella, then I can’t even begin to imagine what type of pure gold is packed into A Spark From Embers, book 1 in the Tears of Flame series. This bittersweet story more than lived up to its darkly ominous title, and it left me both utterly satisfied and desperate for more in the best way possible. If you are looking for a short yet impactful historical fantasy novella that is both epicly magical and intimately human, then I can’t recommend A Tragedy of Sacrifice highly enough (just bring some tissues, you’re welcome).
