Our SPFBOX interviews continue with Sebastian Nothwell, author of Oak King Holly King.

SPFBO (the Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off) is a free online contest run by author Mark Lawrence. 300 authors compete across ten judging teams to see who will be the winner! You can read more about the contest here.

The cover of Sebastian Nothwell's Oak King Holly King. Two men embrace beneath the intertwined branches of two trees. In the background is a delapidated stone fortress. One of the men is a white elf with long, wavy black hair who is dressed in a fur-lined cloak and leather boots. The other is a white human with tapered brown hair. He's dressed in a vaguely Edwardian style with a thigh-length brown coat and greay trousers.

INTERVIEW WITH SEBASTIAN NOTHWELL

Tell us a little about yourself and let our readers know which blog you’ve been assigned to for SPFBOX!

I’m Sebastian Nothwell. I write historical and historical fantasy queer romance. My queer romantasy novel Oak King Holly King was assigned to CoversWithCassidy.

What inspired you to write this book?

The Wiccan mythology of the Oak King and the Holly King duelling at the Summer and Winter Solstices to turn the seasons sounded pretty cool. Then I thought it would be even cooler if, in addition to killing, they were kissing.

Can you tell us a little bit about your writing or editing process? What’s most exciting to you about writing or editing?

The human connection of storytelling is what’s most exciting to me about writing. I made up some guys to keep my brain from bursting into flames, and sharing their story with others who grow to care about my guys as much as I do is an endless delight. For process I like “quilting,” which is writing all the big exciting high-emotion high-energy scenes first, and then going back to write just enough connective tissue between them to make it coherent.

It’s been wonderful to peel back [Shrike’s] layers throughout the story and watch him grow as a character. I’m excited to explore him further in future books.

Who or what have been your major literary influences?
Charles Dickens is, regrettably, a huge influence.

What makes your SPFBOX book unique?
“Unique” is a strong word. I’ve been delighted to discover it’s not the only queer fantasy in the running this year. So glad the readers of today have more options than I did growing up. I haven’t read the 299 other entries (yet) so I can’t say for certain, but I think there’s probably more ritual sex magic and Victorian nonsense in mine than in most others.

Do you have a favourite character from your SPFBOX entry? Tell us about them!

Shrike is delightfully practical, sensitive, nurturing, deeply scarred inside and out, and more powerful than he realizes. It’s been wonderful to peel back his layers throughout the story and watch him grow as a character. I’m excited to explore him further in future books.

How does your work fit into (or challenge) its genre?
It challenges some prevalent preconceptions in the mm romance subgenre specifically. Aside from that, I’m lucky enough that other authors have written queer fantasy before me so I’m not doing anything too challenging by writing another one.

What do you hope readers take away from your SPFBOX entry?
I’d like them to either feel seen by it or come to see the world in a new way after reading it.

What are you currently working on?

Just finished up the audiobook Kickstarter for Oak King Holly King and about to do another! I’m also releasing drawerfic through Patreon and drafting some dark academia dragons.

Oak King Holly King

Shrike, the Butcher of Blackthorn, is a legendary warrior of the fae realms. When he wins a tournament in the Court of the Silver Wheel, its queen names him her Oak King – a figurehead destined to die in a ritual duel to invoke the change of seasons. Shrike is determined to survive. Even if it means he must put his heart as well as his life into a mere mortal’s hands.

Wren Lofthouse, a London clerk, has long ago resigned himself to a life of tedium and given up his fanciful dreams. When a medieval-looking brute arrives at his office to murmur of destiny, he’s inclined to think his old enemies are playing an elaborate prank. Still, he can’t help feeling intrigued by the bizarre-yet-handsome stranger and his fantastical ramblings, whose presence stirs up emotions Wren has tried to lock away in the withered husk of his heart.

As Shrike whisks Wren away to a world of Wild Hunts and arcane rites, Wren is freed from the repression of Victorian society. But both the fae and mortal realms prove treacherous to their growing bond. Wren and Shrike must fight side-by-side to see who will claim victory – Oak King or Holly King.

Sebastian Nothwell

Sebastian Nothwell writes queer romance. When he is not writing, he is counting down the minutes until he is permitted to return to writing. He is absolutely not a ghost and definitely did not die in 1895.

Steve Hugh Westenra

Steve is a trans author of fantasy, science fiction, and horror (basically, if it’s weird he writes it). He grew up on the eldritch shores of Newfoundland, Canada, and currently lives and works in (the slightly less eldritch) Montreal. He holds advanced degrees in Russian Literature, Medieval Studies, and Religious Studies. As a reader, Steve’s tastes are eclectic. He enjoys anything that could be called speculative, including fantasy, sci-fi, and horror, but has been known to enjoy a good mystery as well as literary fiction. He’s always excited to try something new or that pushes boundaries, particularly from marginalized authors. Steve is passionate about queer representation, Late Antiquity, and spiders.
