MEET TEAM Readers of the Lost ARC!
Hello, entrants, readers, authors, and random people who have no investment in books, indie contests, or speculative fiction, but who for some reason have decided to read this blog post! I’m Steve Hugh Westenra, SFINCS 4 and SPFBO XI judge, academic, book reviewer, and author. I’m very pleased (and honoured!) to be returning as a team leader for this year’s contest. Returning to judge with me this year is the fabulous Helyna L. Clove, and we’re both excited to welcome SFINCS 3 semi-finalist Karen Lucia, and author-reviewer Cat Treadwell!
I’m late to the game posting this, but in my defense, Tabitha did a wonderful job posting our team into over on the official SFINCS website, where you can also see all our assigned books!
I’ve assigned each team member nine novellas to read from our team’s allotted books. Each entry will be read by a minimum of two readers to ensure all books get a fair chance (although most of us intend to read past our “official” nine books).
Most important to me as team leader is that each of our allotted books gets a fair shake, regardless of genre, age category, or the personal taste of reviewers. While any judgement or review is always subjective, as someone who has applied to judge in a formal contest setting, and who has been entrusted with your work, my goal is that every work be assessed according to its own merits and within its own context to our best ability.
Team Readers of the Lost ARC is excited to get reading (in fact, I’m sufficiently late posting this that we’ve already started), and as always, we’re honoured to have been trusted with your words. Whether or not you’re lucky enough to progress to the semi-finals or finals, I recommend taking advantage of the opportunities SFINCS offers, chiefly socializing with other authors, but using the contest as an excuse to chat about and promote your entries!
Who’s Reading These ARCs Anyway?

Helyna L. Clove
Helyna L. Clove (she/they) is an astrophysicist, science-fiction/fantasy novelist, and a lover of all types of storytelling, hot comfort drinks, and a universe full of stars. She was born in Hungary and raised in a small village a few miles off the shores of Lake Balaton, and spent the first fifteen years of her life consuming books from her parents’ home library, watching some great 90’s sci-fi shows, and working on her eclectic music taste. After several arduous years of obtaining her degree, then postdoc positions in France and the UK, she currently lives in Germany with her small family of a wonderful boyfriend and Puddle, the tortoiseshell cat. When not writing her stories, she can be found reading voraciously, cooking and baking cautiously, playing video games, or occasionally commandeering radio telescopes.

Cat Treadwell
Cat Treadwell is an author, reviewer and pagan priest from Derbyshire. Her latest book is an anthology arriving in Dec/Jan (exciting!), but meantime she’s usually to be found curled up with a pile of ARCs longer than her life expectancy.

Karen Lucia
Karen is a science fiction and fantasy author from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has been an avid writer, reader, gamer, and all-around nerd core enthusiast her whole life. Having a passion for writing, she has published four full-length novels and four novellas, with more always on the way. Her taste in books spans genres, but there is a special place in her heart for indie books. When she’s not creating worlds or reading, she can be found chasing her children around the zoo, playground, or any other open space they happen across (and probably taking pictures of all the mushrooms they find).

Steve Hugh Westenra
Steve Hugh Westenra is the author of the queer horror comedy, The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle; the epic fantasy, The Wings of Ashtaroth; and the Sword and Sorcery novella The Barbarian at Dream’s End (Brackenbury Books). He has a PhD in monsters and grew up on the eldritch shores of Newfoundland, Canada.

“To find the murderer, and clear my own name, I gotta dive into the Starship Australis’ seedy underworld of prostitutes, dealers, assassins and one seriously pissed off crime boss. Then, maybe, I can make time with my gorgeous bartender, or at least get back to drinking enough to forget what a mess my life’s become.”
Inspired by the grit of Mickey Spillane and the concision of Elmore Leonard, Chivalry Will Get You Dead is a sci-fi / mystery mash-up devised in the best traditions of the dime store paperback. With the past bleeding into the present, the two must face a power as vast and overwhelming as the night — one that threatens not only their lives, but the very shapes of their selves.

Sisyphus, Eat Your Heart Out – Robert Northrup

There’s a boulder on the edge of somebody’s lawn. They found it while plowing a farm field or digging the foundation for a house. It was too big to haul it off so they pushed it out of the way and left it there. They grew flowers around it and stuck a flamingo in front of it. The boulder was deposited on that plot of land by glaciers during the last ice age, dragged for centuries over hundreds of miles as the glaciers froze and melted and flowed and froze again. Before that, it was part of a formation of standing stones in Canada. If you can find that boulder and move it back into position with the original standing stones, you can open a gateway to any time or place you want to go.
How the hell are you going to get it across the border? What magic words do you have to say to make it work? Do you have to do a dance or wave your hands around? How long is your boss going to let you off work to mess with it?
I know where the boulder is.
I know a guy with a truck. Are we doing this?
