Cover of Kit Campbell's Hidden Worlds. Forest leaves in silhouette form a rectangular border around an illustraton of three people standing in a forest flade, about to enter a mysterious flowing blue door. One of the people stands with arms crossed and is a white person with short brown hair wearing beige pants and a white longsleeve. The two other figures have their backs to the viewer as they hold hands and stride toward the door. One has a chin-length bob and is wearing a poppy red or reddish orange sweater wth dark pants. The other is slender with a piratical black hat and a long brown jacket. They have long, straight blond hair.

INTERVIEW WITH KIT CAMPBELL

Tell us a little about yourself and let our readers know which blog you’ve been assigned to for SPFBOX!

I’m Kit! I write fantasy, science fiction, and horror! My book, Hidden Worlds, was assigned to Fantasy Fiction.

What inspired you to write this book?

I wrote it for fun for my friends!

Can you tell us a little bit about your writing or editing process? What’s most exciting to you about writing or editing?

I am a plantser–I do need to do some outlining before I start writing or else my pacing is wildly awry, but I like the freedom to figure out how I’m getting to my plot points outside of that. And I love revision–the process of figuring out what’s wrong and what needs to be fixed, and putting the story in proper order.

Who or what have been your major literary influences?
Terry Brooks has been a major one, as has Patricia Wrede and Dianna Wynne Jones.

What makes your SPFBOX book unique?
It’s a bit meta–the setting is a magical writing community based off a real writing community.

Do you have a favourite character from your SPFBOX entry? Tell us about them!
Someone–he’s a jack-of-all-trades character designed to be used whenever you just need someone to do something. But also he’s wonderfully snarky.

I love revision–the process of figuring out what’s wrong and what needs to be fixed, and putting the story in proper order.

How does your work fit into (or challenge) its genre?
Aside from the setting, it’s a pretty straight forward portal fantasy–main character (Margery in this case) goes through the Door, gets stuck, and has to figure out how to get back out again.

What do you hope readers take away from your SPFBOX entry?
I hope they have fun reading it!

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on the very end of a revision of the first book of a high fantasy trilogy.

Hidden Worlds

Margery has always felt like she’s had no one to share the stories in her head with. That changes when she stumbles across the Spork Room, a magical writing community that might be accessible through her closet one day and the school bathroom the next. The Spork Room has many useful writing tools, but the crowning one is the Door, through which all stories come to life.

There’s only one rule: don’t go through the Door without telling someone.

When Margery breaks the rule, she and her pirate main character release an unspeakable evil, unbalancing the Door and making escape from it impossible. Now, aided by a jack-of-all-trades character named Someone, Margery and her pirate must set everything right by defeating this evil, or be trapped inside the Door forever.

A fantasy adventure in the spirit of Alice in Wonderland, Hidden Worlds has been called “fun,” “enchanting,” and a “really neat crossing world fantasy.” Take your journey through the Door today!

Kit Campbell

It is a little known fact that Kit was raised in the wild by a marauding gang of octopuses. It wasn’t until she was 25 that she was discovered by a traveling National Geographic scientist and brought back to civilization. This is sometimes apparent in the way that she attempts to escape through tubes when startled.

Her transition to normalcy has been slow, but scientists predict that she will have mastered basics such as fork use sometime in the next year. More complex skills, such as proper grocery store etiquette, may be forever outside her reach. Kit can be found online at http://kitcampbellbooks.com.

Steve Hugh Westenra

Steve is a trans author of fantasy, science fiction, and horror (basically, if it’s weird he writes it). He grew up on the eldritch shores of Newfoundland, Canada, and currently lives and works in (the slightly less eldritch) Montreal. He holds advanced degrees in Russian Literature, Medieval Studies, and Religious Studies. As a reader, Steve’s tastes are eclectic. He enjoys anything that could be called speculative, including fantasy, sci-fi, and horror, but has been known to enjoy a good mystery as well as literary fiction. He’s always excited to try something new or that pushes boundaries, particularly from marginalized authors. Steve is passionate about queer representation, Late Antiquity, and spiders.
