Still, her mind fixated on the dream. Was it a scene from the attack that had taken her memory or something else?

Lady Elizabeth Bryne (Liz) is plagued by nightmares. Images of fire and chaos as a dark figure watches her. Amidst flashes of battle and smoke, she writhes in pain within castle ruins. It has been nearly a year since Liz woke up injured and unable to remember her past. Fate, however, does not wait for Liz to recover. When Liz begins to exhibit powers not seen in ages, she is swept into the political turmoil of her country. A political storm is looming in Legacy’s Price by T.L Rolston.

Magical talents mean everything to those in power in Liz’s world. The awakening of her powers immediately makes her public enemy number one. Threatened by her rare ability, politicians scramble to control her. They hide their schemes within the current political upheaval. Liz must remember her past if she is to survive. Unfortunately for her, every answer unlocks more danger. History is repeating in Legacy’s Price.

Self-proclaimed “not like other girls” Liz thankfully does not fall into the romantic tropes often seen in Y.A fantasy. While she is not her father’s heir, she is still bound to the duties of noble women. Shirking her dating obligations is just one facet of her rebellious nature. Liz is shown to be unaccepting of other societal norms.

The world in Legacy’s Price is quirky. The unique cultural customs are constructed from and challenges gender norms, at times, contradicting. T.L Rolston allows readers to navigate this world without delving deep into explanations. Legacy’s Price is almost too short for its complexity.

T.L Rolston’s Legacy’s Price is lightning quick with little divergence. This straightforward tale is about Liz and the mystery surrounding her. While Legacy’s Price is told through multiple perspectives, there is no mistaking the main character. The other characters and their focus too often center around Liz. Certain interesting characters like Morrigan Nightshade, owner of the Blood Moon, don’t quite reach their full potential.

As the first installment of the Storm Warden series, Legacy’s Price rumbles in with a world unstable from political schemes and secrets. Plots centuries in the making are amping up. Whether Liz or anyone will weather the storm remains to be seen.

“Liz wanted nothing more than to go out with the others and make the pirates leave them alone. She knew that she had the power to pull off such a feat.”

Lady Elizabeth Bryne, or Liz as she is known to her friends, is the somewhat sassy protagonist of T.L. Rolston’s young adult fantasy debut, Legacy’s Price. As the novel opens, Liz is invited to join her great-grandmother at a party of nobility hosted by the Duke of Caya, potentially to find an appropriate suitor.

However, Liz draws elitist ire after comparing some of the aristocracy to carrion birds. Liz is challenged to a duel, during which she unexpectedly exercises magical powers, leading to much intrigue about the source of her powers and her intentions for their use.

The plot thickens as Liz’s grandfather, the King, goes missing during a diplomatic mission. Liz finds herself on the defensive as she becomes a suspect in his disappearance. In order to clear her name, Liz sets out to save her grandfather herself.

From its spirited “not like other girls” protagonist to its unveiling of hidden magical powers, Legacy’s Price embraces many of the well-worn tropes of the genre. There are also pirates, dragons, and a moderate dose of amnesia.

T.L. Rolston’s prose flows easily, helping this short book fly by extra quickly and making Legacy’s Price a low commitment for fans of young adult fantasy. This novel may serve as a good entry point for readers new to the genre; however, its overreliance on standard tropes is likely to be a turnoff for more seasoned readers. Personally, I feel like I’ve read all of this before, and for that reason this is a cut from SPFBOX.
