“There is much in a name. A single word that stands for your very being and marks your time in this life.”
I never knew I could be such a dork. I was always the cool kid; at least, I convinced myself I was the cool kid. Shut up. But I have gone absolutely batshit for the “Paternus” series, and it is all Ashton’s fault. He must be stopped.
I was first introduced to “Paternus” by a friend who thought I would enjoy it. I have a penchant for prominent characters, and big personalities, who throw down big time. I am not the most subtle of people. For instance, I have nuclear turrets and lightning grenades when I play Borderlands Two. OPERATION BETHY SHIELD.
Now take all that energy and shove it deep down into a wonderfully crafted backstory, brilliant characters, and you have the energy that ‘Paternus” puts out.
The premise is this:
“Described as American Gods meets The Avengers and Supernatural meets The Lord of the Rings, Paternus combines myths from around the world in a modern story of action and intrigue that is “urban fantasy on the surface, but so much more at its core!”
Even myths have legends. And not all legends are myth.
When a local hospital is attacked by strange and frightening men, Fiona Patterson and Zeke Prisco save a catatonic old man named Peter—and find themselves running for their lives with creatures beyond imagination hounding their every step.
With nowhere else to turn, they seek out Fi’s enigmatic Uncle Edgar. But the more their questions are answered, the more they discover that nothing is what it seems–not Peter, not Edgar, perhaps not even themselves.
The gods and monsters, heroes and villains of lore—they’re real. And now they’ve come out of hiding to hunt their own. In order to survive, Fi and Zeke must join up with powerful allies against an ancient evil that’s been known by many names and feared by all. The final battle of the world’s oldest war has begun.”
All the myths. All of them. Ashton is a monster. Not only that, they are excellently researched and thought out. He has the audacity of being culturally sensitive. My poor brain is both, “Thank you for this interesting information that I will now go on a 12-hour rabbit hole reading,” and “LET” S GOOO.” Incidentally, “Paternus” reminds me of “Let’s Go” by Trick Daddy. By book three, I was humming this in my head while reading.
Lets Gooooo! (Lets Gooooo!)
If you want it you can get it let me know (let me know),
If you want some, come get some,
’cause where I’m from we tote big guns,
And everybody know somebody that
know somebody that know somethin bout it…
Unacceptable. Ashton has turned me into an early 90s rap-humming, mythology-seeking dork. And I can’t seem to shut up about it. Every interview, I get my little god-shaped pom poms out and sing to the masses how everyone should be reading his books. If you want to be like me and get sucked in, read this series and “LET’S GOOOOO.”
PS I just learned the plot of his new series, and I am completely fucked. I should just throw money at his feet. “Please may I have another.”
