“Peanut Butter Jelly Time. Peanut Butter Jelly Time. Peanut Butter Jelly Time.”
What is Peanut Butter and Jelly About?
Narwhal’s obsession with his new favorite food leads him into hijinks and hilarity in the third book of this all-star early graphic novel series!
Narwhal and Jelly are back and Narwhal has a new obsession . . . peanut butter! He’s so obsessed he even wants to change his name to . . . that’s right . . . Peanut Butter! Ever-sensible Jelly isn’t so sure that’s the best idea, but is all for Narwhal trying new things (instead of just eating waffles all the time, no matter how delicious waffles are).
In this third book, Narwhal and Jelly star in three new stories about trying new things, favorite foods and accepting who we are. Always funny and never didactic, this underwater duo charms again through their powerful combination of positive thinking, imagination and joyfulness.
My Thoughts
I received Peanut Butter and Jelly by Ben Clanton as an ARC from NetGalley and I am new to the series. But, oh man this book has made me a believer. It is just adorable. Not adorable in the annoying cutesy – fart way, but adorable in an uncluttered and visually appealing way with great characters. I bet this series launches a lot of memes for adults and yet it still retains a silly and approachability for young readers. I enjoyed the lighthearted tone, the graphics, and occasional interesting science fact thrown in. (Good for trivia night as an adult.) Furthermore, Narwhal’s seemed to A forgotten animal, it is a see unicorn for goodness sake, there should be tons of stories about this near mythical creature.
Did you know that Humpback whales work together and make bubble nets to catch fish?
I would highly recommend this novel to the 2nd-5th grade reader and an adult who enjoys lighthearted fun. It is whimsical and can speak to children of a certain age, but fun enough that I can see adults enjoying reading it as much with their children as the kids reading it themselves. Plus the characters are copyable and you can run around the house pretending you are a narwhal that lose PB&J.
As a side note, I can definitely empathize with Narwhal’s obsession with his new favorite food. I too find myself feeling like Narwhal. You may now call me Madam Von Peanut. Don’t mind me while I am over here leading my best life as a narwhal.
