INTERVIEW WITH TAR ATORE

Cover of Tar Atore's Soultaming the Serpent. The cover is illustrated digitally in purple tones and features a person standing beneath a tree and watching a dragon that's partly shrouded by mist or smoke. There are pale purple butterflies flying along a winding river.

Tell us a little about yourself and let our readers know which blog you’ve been assigned to for SPFBOX!

I’m known as Konstance online mostly, but I write under the pen name Tar Atore (a language joke). I got assigned to the Fantasy Book Critic and though I was one of the first books cut, I am super happy with the review I got!

What inspired you to write this book?

This book was written as part of the Inkfort Press Derby last year – where we were assigned a cover and had to write, publish, and promo a book based on it in 4 months. The ebook cover is the one that inspired the story, along with my own spite of wanting to go against popular romantasy tropes.

Can you tell us a little bit about your writing or editing process? What’s most exciting to you about writing or editing?

I am a platster (or panty-liner, as I saw it once and stuck with me) where in I plan out the main beats of my story, but leave the details and specifics to flow naturally as I write and will adjust my outline as the story progresses.

My favourite part of the writing process is the initial plan – I like to just throw things around and see where they stick and then watch as things fall into place as the story progresses.

“I wanted to twist around the Chosen One trope, have an older character take the lead and not have her over-powered or competent at it, and turn the love triangle queer.”

Who or what have been your major literary influences?

RA Salvatore was my biggest influence in the fantasy genre – especially with how he writes fighting scenes. Since I haven’t read trad in a while though, I do want to give more focus to the indie authors that influence and inspire me – every single indie author that stands against the flow and works so hard to publish what they want to and write such amazing stories.

What makes your SPFBOX book unique?

Soultaming the Serpent is a twist of common romantasy tropes, from the cover itself to the story, with a main character in her 60s (and looking that way), to a love triangle that doesn’t have “rivals”, a chosen one that can be questioned, and a world that makes sense with fairy tale logic.

Do you have a favourite character from your SPFBOX entry? Tell us about them!

Casey is the third character from my main three and though Jun and Aurel are characters I love for different reasons, Casey has a special place in my heart. He was originally created to be the “love rival” so common in such stories, where he was the main character’s best friend and had been in love with her for years – but the more I got to know him, the more I fell in love with him and realized that he could be so much more – so that’s what I did – I made him more than just a love rival and turned him into a major part of the love triangle!

How does your work fit into (or challenge) its genre?

My goal was to challenge the genre – I already mentioned in a few of the other questions, but I wanted to twist around the Chosen One trope, have an older character take the lead and not have her over-powered or competent at it, and turn the love triangle queer. I market this story as a romantasy, but in truth it is a *love* story, not necessarily a romantic once.

What do you hope readers take away from your SPFBOX entry?

My main hope is that they enjoy it. When I write, I tend to focus on the idea of there not being a right time, or place, or thing to do. Everybody has their own lives and decides on their own what’s right for them – I hope that message gets across along with the love that I wanted to portray in this story.

What are you currently working on?

I very recently finished up a novella that takes place in the same world as my ongoing fantasy serial, and I’m hoping to have my sci-fi duology out by the end of this year! Basically, I have too many things on my plate but I’m doing my best to get them out faster because I have even more things on my to-do list and ideas I want to get out to readers. But, basically, I stick with fantasy and sci-fi and always with a romantic subplot and queer characters!

Soultaming the Serpent

Jun never knew adventure until she took her first step out of her village at age 60 and then found a young man, which only led her to more adventures and stories, some of which point to home.

—

The last dragon died half a century ago and Jun Weaver still dreams of the rain that hasn’t fallen since. Her mundane life takes a turn when she encounters Aurel, who she suspects may be the one that holds the key to restoring balance and is destined to find the elusive serpent from the prophecy.

Joined by Casey, Jun’s closest friend and the village brewer, the three embark on a journey to unravel the prophecy’s intricacies, figure out what the serpent’s role truly is, and why the dragon has to die, not knowing they are being watched.

Follow our trio as Jun discovers a love of adventure, Casey’s devotion takes an unexpected turn, Aurel spills his secrets like dust in the sand, and the three of them discover the true power of their bond.

Photo of Tar Atore!

Tar Atore is a pen name used by Konstance. Konstance is an avid reader from a young age, that got even more sucked into it when she first moved to Canada to help her learn the language – and the meaning of *rubber*.

When she applied to do an undergrad in Professional Writing, one of her parents asked her “and what will that look like as a job in the future?” Her answer: “I’m gonna sit around at home all day and read.”

And yes, that is what she is doing now! Along with writing and drawing, Konstance works with indie authors to create their covers, maps, and typeset their books. Her favourite procrastination technique is making epic spreadsheets.

Konstance is a fan of epics and queer romances, subverting tropes, and twists that actually surprise. In 2023, Konstance debuted (for the second time) under the pen name PM Hammond, which she then updated to her desired pen name Tar Atore (reach out if you get the joke of it).

Steve Hugh Westenra

Steve is a trans author of fantasy, science fiction, and horror (basically, if it’s weird he writes it). He grew up on the eldritch shores of Newfoundland, Canada, and currently lives and works in (the slightly less eldritch) Montreal. He holds advanced degrees in Russian Literature, Medieval Studies, and Religious Studies. As a reader, Steve’s tastes are eclectic. He enjoys anything that could be called speculative, including fantasy, sci-fi, and horror, but has been known to enjoy a good mystery as well as literary fiction. He’s always excited to try something new or that pushes boundaries, particularly from marginalized authors. Steve is passionate about queer representation, Late Antiquity, and spiders.
