SFINCS – Our Reviews

Review by Laura from Laura from OWWR Pod

When Phrai joins a crew of thieves aiming to steal from the high constable, the others in the group don’t find the timid Phrai to be much of a threat. However, things change quickly as the team goes about their thieving plan and learns that Phrai might have a different plan in mind.

A Wolf in Thief’s Clothing is extremely fast-paced and high stakes, but this doesn’t take away from the characters or world-building which seem well thought out. Imagery and dialogue are definitely the author’s strong points because the story/characters were so easy to picture and the discourse between characters was excellent. I also greatly appreciated the small breadcrumb reveals given throughout this story.

The author plays with the timeline somewhat, which I enjoyed, but I think that certain scenes were given too much attention. There is a chapter dedicated to a game of “Ships” in this novella that is really detailed and fun, but seemed a little out of place to me. I personally would have liked to have been given more time with the heist or some back and forth with the crew. While the heist seemed somewhat rushed, the story did end really nicely and did leave me wanting to read more about Phrai and the world of Erlahain.

Score: 7.0 out of possible 10.

A Wolf in Thief’s Clothing

Fun Fact: I will never tire of strong and clever FMC’s.

Quick-ish Pitch:

Heist goes wrong… or does it really?

What I Liked:

I appreciate plots where the MC is a few steps ahead of everyone but you can’t fully understand the *why* just yet.

Minor Tiffs:

  • I’ve never read a book where a new card game made sense or kept my attention.
  • TBH, I didn’t understand the purpose of the post-card game drugging but, but maybe I was focused on the wrong plot threads.

Recommended:

  • When you want Oceans 11 to be more like Ocean 1.

Favorite Line:

“While the whole city had a fishy, ocean sort of smell, the odors of this section of Galeport leaned more toward mildew and the stench of humanity.”
