Kindle Unlimited is a service that can theoretically provide you with limitless numbers of books for the price of one normal release every month. This is a tremendous blessing for those of us who are fast readers. I pretty much have read every single Red Sonja comic ever written thanks to Dynamite Entertainment putting almost all their comics on the service.
However, what we here at Before We Go want most is good Kindle Unlimited books. As such, here is a recommendation of a bunch of entertaining ones that I’ve enjoyed and can say rise above the dross.
1. SPACE STATION NOIR BY ARTHUR MAYOR
Space Station Noir is a fun science fiction story set in a world where humanity has been conquered by giant birdmen who look like ostriches. Our protagonist has to live as a second class citizen in a space station where the only work for his kind is crime. It’s a pretty interesting set up and an enjoyable one that reminded me a bit of Deep Space Nine and Babylon Five. I had a lot of fun with this book as a fan of crime fiction and science fiction both.

2. FAITHLESS BY GRAHAM AUSTIN KINGFaithless is a fantastic book about a young man that is sold into slavery by his father to the Forgefather’s god’s priests. Forced into the dark and horrifying mines underneath the temple, Wynn will do anything to escape. That means betraying his fellow slaves as well as plotting to involve himself in the temple’s infighting. Can a person justify their actions if it means doing evil to escape the worst fate imaginable? Is the Forgefather real or just a tool of control? What does it mean to be a slave of the temple when you are faithless. Faithless is an excellent dark fantasy novel that I highly recommend.

Unfortunately, Arkady has the worst luck in the world as he’s soon dragooned into serving as a contestant on a galaxy-famous reality television show. Arkady has no choice but to fight and win or he’s going to die. But every time he’s on television, he runs the risk of loudly broadcasting himself to his enemies–if he hasn’t from the very moment he appeared on television. Psychodrome is a fantastic cyberpunk novel and satire that really needs a new cover.

Fresh out of the service, Arkady O’Toole decides to celebrate with a gambling spree on the Ginza Strip of Tokyo. He winds up in a game of high stakes poker with some heavy duty players and makes one very big mistake — he wins. The man he takes down for a bundle turns out to be a warlord of the Yakuza and Hakim Saqqara doesn’t like to lose.
Trying to escape Saqqara’s vengeance, O’Toole enters Psychodrome, the ultimate reality game show, where the audience can link up and access the thoughts and feelings of the players as they compete in an intergalactic scavenger hut where reality blurs with computer simulation and winning could make a player rich … or it could make him dead.
And as if that wasn’t challenging enough, O’Toole discovers that Saqqara’s ninja assassins have followed him into the game ….
4. LEGACY OF THE BRIGHTWASH BY KRYSTLE MATAR
Legacy of the Brightwash is a fantastic steampunk fantasy set in a dark fantasy world. In this world, magic is punishable by life imprisonment. Tashue’s son was one of these children and he made the difficult choice of turning over him. However, Tashue regrets this decision and is increasingly discovering that his beliefs about how merciful this punishment is are completely wrong. Who could have guessed in a grimdark book?

Tashué’s faith in the law is beginning to crack. Three years ago, he stood by when the Authority condemned Jason to the brutality of the Rift for non-compliance. When Tashué’s son refused to register as tainted, the laws had to be upheld. He’d never doubted his job as a Regulation Officer before, but three years of watching your son wither away can break down even the strongest convictions.
Then a dead girl washed up on the bank of the Brightwash, tattooed and mutilated. Where had she come from? Who would tattoo a child? Was it the same person who killed her? Why was he the only one who cared?

However, he’s a hero with a serious issue with authority and takes on the dangers of his new home with snarktastic dialogue.
