Mike Shackle is author of the critically acclaimed grimdark fantasy trilogy, The Last War, starting with his debut novel, We Are the Dead, inspired by real-life stories of resistance in Europe and Asia during World War II. The Last War trilogy is military fantasy at its finest, a grimdark tale depicting the horrors of war and martial law from the perspectives of everyday people trying to resist foreign occupation. Beyond Mike Shackle’s outstanding worldbuilding and character development, I was most touched by his focus on the humanity behind the unspeakable violence and tragedy of war.

Check out my complete reviews of The Last War trilogy:

  3. Until the Last

Originally from London, Mike Shackle has called Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, New York, and Dubai his home over the years before settling down with his family in Vancouver. In that time, he’s sold washing machines, cooked for royalty, designed a few logos, and made a lot of ads. Ideally, he’s happiest daydreaming over a cup of tea. Mike Shackle was honored by Grimdark Magazine as a 2023 Rising Star of Grimdark SFF.

Tori Tecken and I recently teamed up for an interview with Mike Shackle, where we covered his themes of war, motherhood, and how ordinary people can show bravery against overwhelming odds. Our interview also included a detailed discussion of Mike Shackle’s character development process and his love of comic book art. Our full interview is in the video below:
